Summerberg Place is offering all inclusive lifestyle rentals for retired people over the age of 50, looking for a place on the KZN South Coast, where they can enjoy peace of mind during their best years, without having to lay out the money to purchase a unit. We are located in Elysium, close to Pennington and Scottburgh, in the Bush and on the Beach.
Background
Debbie and Philip van Achterbergh own Summerberg Place, which is currently used as a wedding venue, known as The Laughing Forest. Depending on interest, over the next three years, they plan to gradually turn the venue into a full time, full-service, 1 Bedroom and Studio apartment rental package, in which eventually there will be approximately 60 residents, with no more wedding activities. This is all dependent on interest in the concept.
Time Frame and Concept
Occupants can move in starting July 2024. The rental includes 1 Bedroom Apartments that include a small lounge and Deck or Studio Rooms which all have a bathroom en-suit. The apartments include food, housekeeping service, laundry, and internet. The owners plan to arrange a trip to Scottburgh once per week and a regular Friday trip to the Umdoni Golf Club, where residents can enjoy some alternate socializing or a quick 9 holes. Residents will need to have either a medical aid or hospital plan in place, as there will be no frail care services.
The property on which the lifestyle apartments are located is situated in Elysium, a discreet and intimate holiday village that presents itself as the perfect place to enjoy your best days in a restful place. Here, friends can forge connections amid the splendor of our exquisite gardens or along the pristine shores where there are several estuaries that are full of birdlife.
With a view from the terraces of the glazed sun, rising over the ocean, accompanied by an early-bird cappuccino there is good reason to feel at peace with the universe in this tranquil setting.
The property has 12 Studio rooms, including a deck and a private bathroom, and 4 one bedroom apartments with a small living area, kitchen, and deck. Not all apartments have a sea view but the ocean can be heard from all over the property and the gardens are a comforting sight.
Wedding activity
There will be on average 1 – 3 weddings per month, when guests will have their own area to separate them from residents. Half of these weddings are full Saturday affairs and the other half extend into the Saturday evening. The wedding music is sometimes elevated but not unbearable and is shut off by 11 pm. This activity will eventually be phased out once the full conversion has been done. Depending on interest this will take between 2 – 3 years.
Security
The facility has 24-hour security, including cameras and an on-site evening guard.

This apartment consists of Bedroom, Bathroom en-suite, Lounge, Kitchen and covered deck area. Taking advantage of a lock up and go opportunity. Includes 2 meals a day, laundry service, housekeeping and wifi.

This Studio Room, retirement lifestyle rental option, would suit a single person looking for an all inclusive secure package, so that they can enjoy peace of mind during their best years. The Studio consists of a Bedroom, Bathroom en-suite, communal kitchen and sundeck. Also lock up and go opportunity, includes 2 meals a day, laundry service, housekeeping and wifi.

- Our minimum contract period is 6 Months
- Laundry is done Monday to Friday
- Weekly linen and towel service
- Housekeeping – rooms are serviced twice per week
- Breakfast is served between 8 – 9am
- Lunch is served between 12 – 2 pm
- There is no health care or elderly supervision on site
- Studio accommodation is for one person
- 1 Bedroom Apartment for 2 people and includes a lounge & small kitchen
- Studio accommodation has basic kitchen equipment in the room.
- All rooms have bathroom en-suite
- Rooms are not fitted with DSTV but do have Fibre connection
- Rooms can either be fully furnished or supply your own furniture
- Electrical backup restricted to core requirements
- On-site Water Backup for one week
- All occupants need proof of a Medical Aid or Hospital Plan.
- No more than 3 weddings per month.
- All music at weddings finish by 11pm.
- Unfortunately no under cover parking available at this stage.
